Medieval guilds are a group of people that stick together in order to reduce competition, gain public trust, and stay protected. There are two types of guilds, merchant guilds and craftsmen guilds. Merchant guilds are made out of many merchants traveling in the same way, they travel together because there wasn’t a government to protect them in the medieval times. Merchant guilds sometimes get a charter of freedom from the king, this allows them to not pay federal taxes. Merchant guilds help their community by donating to the church and to the poor. Craftsman guilds require a fee to join, this covers the upkeep of the guildhall(the place where the guild members meet) and the training of the new person. People who are in the guild strive to earn the “master” title, in order to earn it, you must create a masterpiece and have enough money to host a banquet and start your own store. Stores that are part of a guild cannot sell things cheaper than others, nor can they steal customers.
